Is Blogging Dead? How to Survive Google AI Search and Keep Creating

Google is answering everyone’s questions before they even click on your website. So why on earth would anyone start a blog today?

I’ve got a small confession to make.

Years ago, I ran a Japanese blog about K-pop. One of my favorite groups to cover was TWICE. Around the time they made their big debut in Japan, I actually managed to rank NUMBER ONE on Google for some of my main articles!

First place!

For a completely regular guy writing about a group he loved, that was mind-blowing!

I wasn’t sitting around calculating keyword density with a calculator or studying 500-page SEO courses. I was just genuinely obsessed with the topic, had real thoughts to share, and wrote my heart out.

And Google sent thousands of readers right to my site. Life was good!

Fast forward to 2026.

You search for something on Google, and boom—an AI Overview answers your question right there on the search page. Zero clicks required.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT can churn out a 2,000-word article in 3 seconds, and the internet is getting flooded with millions of identical, generic AI posts every single day.

So here is the million-dollar question:

Is blogging dead, or have we just been playing the wrong game all along?!

As someone who spent years collecting blogging courses, ranking K-pop posts, and now builds websites and digital products alongside ChatGPT… I have a few strong opinions.

And spoiler alert: Giving up is NOT an option!

Is Blogging Really Dying? Let’s Look at the Raw Numbers

Google’s AI Overviews Are Stealing Your Clicks

Remember the good old days when Google search meant a neat list of blue links?

You typed a question, clicked a link, visited a blog, and read the answer. It was a fair deal: Bloggers created the content, Google sent the readers, everyone won.

Enter Google AI Overviews.

Now, Google generates a neat AI summary right at the top of the search page. If that summary answers the user’s quick question, guess what? They leave without ever visiting your website!

Great for the user looking for a quick quick answer. Absolute nightmare for the blogger hoping for a click! (lol)

Look at the real data: A 2025 Pew Research Center study tracked U.S. adults browsing Google.

  • When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional search link in only 8% of visits.
  • Without an AI summary, that click rate was 15%.
  • And those tiny source links cited inside the AI summary? They were clicked in a laughable 1% of visits!

That is a massive drop!

Getting mentioned in Google search results and getting someone to actually visit your website are now two completely different things.

If your entire blogging strategy relies 100% on passive Google traffic, you’re sitting on a ticking time bomb.

Small Publishers Are Getting Squeezed

It gets crazier.

Axios reported on Chartbeat data tracking thousands of publishers over two years. Search engine referral traffic fell:

  • 60% drop for smaller publishers (1,000 to 10,000 daily page views)
  • 47% drop for medium publishers
  • 22% drop for massive corporate publishers

If you relied purely on quick informational traffic (“What is X?”, “How to do Y?”), Google’s AI just ate your lunch.

The old internet we learned to blog on is dead and buried.

I Once Ranked #1 on Google Without Obsessing Over SEO

My TWICE Blog Wasn’t Built by a Math Algorithm

Back during my K-pop blogging days, I didn’t care about “algorithm hacks.” I was just a fan sharing real excitement.

That experience taught me something I still believe with 100% conviction:

A great blog post starts with understanding what a real human being actually cares about.

But I also learned a brutal lesson later: Search rankings can vanish overnight.

Google changes its algorithm. Competitors jump in. AI steals the top snippet.

If your entire business relies on being #1 for a single keyword on Google, you don’t own a business—you’re just renting space on Google’s land, and they can kick you out whenever they want!

SEO Still Matters, But It Can’t Be Your Only Weapon

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not telling you to throw SEO in the trash. I still care about punchy titles, internal links, and search intent. I’ve even built custom WordPress plugins to manage internal links on my blogs!

SEO is a great way for new readers to discover you. It just shouldn’t be the ONLY reason your blog exists!

Imagine writing a generic “5 Benefits of Exercise” article. Google’s AI will summarize it in 2 seconds. The reader gets their answer, closes the tab, and forgets you ever existed.

Now, imagine writing about something Google CANNOT summarize:

  • An embarrassing $2,000 mistake you made starting a business.
  • A hilarious disaster that happened at your job last Tuesday.
  • A weird, unexpected lesson you learned after failing for 3 years.

Google can summarize basic facts. It CANNOT summarize your raw experience, your sense of humor, or your authentic journey.

That is the exact kind of blogging I care about.

AI Can Churn Out 1,000 Posts. What Makes Yours Special?

The World Doesn’t Need Another Boring AI Article

Let’s be honest. ChatGPT is ridiculously good at churning out generic blog posts.

Ask it for “10 Benefits of Working From Home,” and it gives you ten polite, perfectly structured, utterly boring points.

It looks like a textbook written by a corporate consultant in a tight suit. (lol)

If millions of people use AI to generate the same generic fluff, the internet gets flooded with garbage.

Google’s official policy even warns that churning out scaled, low-value AI content just to manipulate search rankings violates their guidelines.

Using AI isn’t the problem. Publishing soul-less, unoriginal junk with zero human perspective is the problem!

Stop Asking AI to Invent Stories. Feed It YOUR Real Life!

These days, I work night shifts at a hotel and ride my bike doing food delivery around Japan.

It’s not a glamorous “laptop lifestyle on a beach in Bali.” There are no sports cars outside. Most nights, I’m just exhausted, trying to finish my shift and get home!

But guess what? Those ordinary, messy experiences are pure gold for blogging!

If I ask ChatGPT to write: “Benefits of Being a Delivery Driver,” it gives me a dry article about “flexibility and outdoor exercise.” Yawn.

So instead, I tell ChatGPT what REALLY happened:

“Look, I ride my bike delivering food, but I also keep my night-shift hotel job. My delivery buddies tell me I’m crazy for keeping the night job when delivery pays more on good days. But I hate worrying about rent when delivery demand drops! Plus, dealing with self-employed taxes was a total nightmare for me! I like the freedom of delivery work, but my favorite part? I can decide NOT to do it today! (lol)”

See the difference?!

Now we’re talking about real trade-offs, real frustrations, and genuine humor.

AI handles the typing and formatting. But the messy experiences, hot takes, and decisions MUST come from you!

What Should You Blog About When Google Answers Everything?

1. Write About What You’ve Actually LIVED Through

If Google can answer a question in 3 bullet points, don’t write an article just repeating those 3 bullet points.

Share your real experience!

  • Talk about that expensive online course you bought that completely paralyzed you.
  • Share that custom tool you built because you were sick of doing repetitive chores.
  • Reveal that epic failure that taught you a lesson no textbook could ever explain.

I spent years hoarding blogging and affiliate marketing courses. Some were great, most overwhelmed me. When I started working with ChatGPT, I realized I didn’t need another $997 course—I just needed a way to execute what I already knew!

That’s not a story buried in a keyword research tool. That’s my real life.

2. Show the Messy Journey, Not Just the Polished Result

Don’t just write: “How to Build a WordPress Tool.”

Write: “I Asked ChatGPT to Build a WordPress Tool. Here’s What Blew Up in My Face!”

Show the process!

  • What problem were you trying to solve?
  • What broke on the first try?
  • What made you want to throw your laptop out the window?
  • How did you finally get it to work?

When I build tools with ChatGPT, things rarely work on the first try. Sometimes they break five times in a row!

Sharing those real struggles builds massive trust with readers. Nobody wants to read another fake “everything was effortless” brag post.

3. Build an Audience That Actually Remembers Your Name

In the old days, the goal was just getting a visitor from Google to read one page and leave.

Today, the goal is getting them to say: “Who wrote this?! This guy is hilarious and real!”

  • Link your related posts together so they can explore your world.
  • Invite them to join your personal email list so you can talk to them directly.

Google can tweak its algorithm tomorrow and destroy search traffic. But your email list? That is YOUR direct line to real people who actually care about your voice.

My New Strategy: Let Google Introduce Us, Then Build a Real Relationship

If you found this article through a search engine, SEO did its job. It introduced us!

But I don’t want you leaving thinking: “Well, that was another dry list of blogging tips.”

I want you to remember the author:

  • The Japanese guy who once hit #1 on Google with a TWICE blog.
  • The former course hoarder who broke free and built his own products.
  • The guy working night shifts and riding a delivery bike who uses ChatGPT as a writing partner.

A great blog isn’t just a database of quick answers. It’s a place where real human beings connect over real experiences!

How I Use ChatGPT Without Sounding Like a Robot

Here is my exact workflow:

  1. Talk First, Draft Second: I open ChatGPT and start spilling my thoughts out loud. I talk about my past, my failures, my hot takes. ChatGPT asks follow-up questions until we dig up the REAL story.
  2. Call Out the Robot Fluff: When ChatGPT drafts something stiff, I call it out! “Tone it down! Stop making me sound like a corporate lawyer! Keep that funny failure story in!”
  3. Build a Personal AI Ghostwriter: Over time, I feed AI my writing profile so it learns my exact tone, humor, and sentence flow.

I don’t ask AI to pretend it lived my life. I use AI to help me express the life I actually lived!

Is It Still Worth Starting a Blog Today?

YES — 100% YES!

If your entire strategy is pumping out 500 generic, soul-less AI articles and praying for Google traffic… yeah, you’re gonna get crushed.

But if you have real hobbies, messy mistakes, authentic opinions, and a desire to help someone who is one step behind you? Blogging is more powerful today than ever!

You don’t need a movie-star life. You don’t need millions in the bank.

Just open ChatGPT, start talking about something you’ve struggled with, and let AI help you organize it.

Stop overthinking. Stop hoarding courses you’ll never finish.
